Ladbrokes has stopped banking on BBC reveal the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers sparked fears the yohaig code winner's name may have been leaked.

The very first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday evening.

It is the 6th series of the program, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Each week the yohaig code amateur bakers are anticipated to tackle a baking difficulty, with minimal instructions, and provide a "signature dish".

The bookmaker said a flurry of bets came in for among the 12 participants whose odds started at 12/1 and were lowered to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.

"We offered prices on Monday and, nearly before the ink was dry, an unusual variety of punters were in a rush to back just one participant," David Williams of Ladbrokes stated.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the same one-way traffic. That was enough to set our alarm bells calling and, as a safety measure, we suspended our wagering.

"Hopefully, we'll go back up with modified odds earlier instead of later, but we didn't desire to get captured with our pants pulled down and a soaked bottom, so we've chosen to kick back till we are reassured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.

"When you see a run of bets like this for one participant at the cost of everyone else that can be a sign to suspend wagering for a bit to examine the situation," he added.

Several of the bets put were the optimum the bookie would consider wagers made on the program's outcome, and 90% were put on one participant.

The suspension would not impact bets currently positioned, the business stated.

The very first candidate to be knocked out of the competition on Wednesday evening was Stuart Henshall from Surrey.

The 11 remaining participants are from Berkshire, Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, London, West Yorkshire, Manchester, Essex, Swansea and 2 from Perthshire.
